PDF Book of the Week for September 10th

From the Nomadic Delirium Press blog:
For one week only, get the Ephemeris RPG core rulebook for 50% off from DriveThruRPG at https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/63664
The year is 2185. The human race has gone to the stars, and found that they're not alone. Local space is teeming with civilizations, some hostile, some friendly, and some indifferent. This is the universe of Ephemeris.
Ephemeris is a game of galactic trade and galactic conquest; of inter-species conflict and cooperation. Ephemeris is a science fiction role playing game. Here you will be able to take on the role of your favorite alien species and your favorite class. You will be able to trade, fight, negotiate, conquer, whatever you'd like to do with your fellow players. You can play the role of an Althani Trader, or maybe an Arbonix Cyber Wizard, or maybe even a Human Nanist. You can create a party made up entirely of one species and set out to upset the trade routes of a rival species. Or maybe you want to create a party with a variety of species that preys upon the trading routes of the various civilizations. Or maybe you want to explore the ancient ruins on long dead planets, ruins that clearly show that there were other species roaming the spaceways in the past...but where are they now? You can fight in great wars, negotiate grand peace treaties, and explore sections of the galaxy that no sentient has ever explored. Or maybe your party has joined with one of the interplanetary corporations; corporations whose motives are never entirely clear. These are just some of the possibilities open to you.
The universe of Ephemeris is yours to do with as you please. What you now hold in your hands are the basic guidelines for the games. Here you'll find the races, classes, abilities, skills, weapons, and ships that allow you to create your own Ephemeris universe.
Now, step inside for the greatest science fiction adventure you've ever been on...
Be sure to pick up the free supplement, Ephemeris RPG Rule Changes, to see what we've added to the original rules.

PDF Book of the Week for September 3rd

From the Nomadic Delirium Press blog:
For one week only, get The Battle for Turtle Island: Buffalo Wars for 50% off at DriveThruRPG: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/111293
Imagine it's the 19th century, and the colonization/conquest of the Americas is underway yet again, only this time magic is real, and the Indians have a lot more of it than the colonists.  This is the world of The Battle for Turtle Island: Buffalo Wars.
The colonists may have the better weapons, but the Indians nearly double the magic of the colonists.  Maybe this time the history of the Americas will be very, very different.
The Battle for Turtle Island: Buffalo Wars is actually two books in one.  It has the core rules for The Battle for Turtle Island RPG, which will be a series of books featuring the different parts of the Americas, and it also has the Buffalo Wars supplement which looks at the battles for the plains.
You can choose to be a Cavalry Soldier, an Arapahoe Medicine Man, a Colonist Trapper, an Apache Warrior, or any number of other classes, and your character can choose to change classes as they advance.
This book contains, the character classes, the special abilities for each Indian tribe, the goods, the spells, and much more.  The only other thing you'll need to play is some dice and a vivid imagination.

The Fifth Di...

From the Nomadic Delirium Press blog:

The September 2018 issue of The Fifth Di... is now available.

The September issue of The Fifth Di… takes you to a myriad of worlds that you could never imagine. Go to a world where humans are struggling against the native plant life, and see just how far the children of the colonists will go to protect that plant life. Visit an interplanetary vessel like you’ve never seen before…even the inhabitants of the ship are surprised by what they find. In another world, a man dies…again, and again, and again. On Earth, a woman is visited by a being from another dimension, and he has something that might be amazing to offer to her. Also on Earth, a man struggles with not inheriting his father’s future. Just how far will he go (in time) to try to get what he feels is his? And finally, visit another reality where the heroes you are familiar with have very different lives…

Delirious Doubles Presents The Impossible Child & The Games Go On

From the Nomadic Delirium Press blog:

Delirious Doubles presents two stories from different authors. This edition gives you The Impossible Child by Tyree Campbell…a woman from another world has come to Earth to study the fallen society of the planet. Early in her mission she is raped by a gang of marauders and becomes pregnant with a daughter. Now that it’s almost time to return to her own world, she must decide what to do with her young daughter…take her with her or leave her behind on the hostile planet…or does she even have a choice.

You also get The Games Go On by Mike Morgan…a woman is born as an adult into a world where her family has sold her into indentured servitude as a gladiator, a gladiator that is meant to fight for the masses, but when there are no battles, she begins to wonder what’s really going, and once she learns the truth, she’ll be forced to decide what to do with the information.

PDF Book of the Week for August 13th

From the Nomadic Delirium Press blog:
For one week only, get Quantum Women by Tyree Campbell for half off from DriveThruFiction at http://www.drivethrufiction.com/product/156413/Quantum-Women
A quantum is a self-contained unit—of energy, light, and so forth. It exists in and of itself, irrespective of its surroundings. But it can be, and usually is, part of a team.
A quantum woman, then, is a self-contained person, independent, yet willing to be part of a team if the right teammate comes along.
Quantum women aren’t superheroines with superpowers, they’re not “chicks in chain mail,” although they might be, as Pamela Sargent wrote, “Women of Wonder.” For the most part, quantum women are everyday folks in a science fiction or fantasy setting. They might be home-makers or home-wreckers, homely or homey, but all of them are focused, determined, willful, and independent. To those who have men in their lives, they are partners and companions, equals and not subordinates.
And yet, like any of us, they can find themselves in extraordinary situations where a bit of heroism can save the day. You’ll encounter them on these pages.

The Ephemeris Encyclopedia Galactica: Sectors 47 & 48

The exploration of “Deep Space” continues.
Sectors Forty-Seven & Forty-Eight are lightly inhabited sectors, but with the Ernya around, there's still bound to be conflict, and if you want mysteries, there's always the remains of star ships that don't belong to any of the "Deep Space" species, plus enough mysteries to keep your players happy for years.

The legalization of pot and the destruction of the lower class

For a few years now, pot has been legal in Colorado, and as expected, the economy here is booming, and I do mean BOOMING. Businesses are coming here to open new offices, unemployment is very low, and everything looks great to everyone outside of Colorado. The problem is that the cost of living in Colorado is skyrocketing with housing costs going up nearly 10% every year, and the cost of groceries, and everything else going up at nearly the same rate...and there's the problem. For the upper class and the upper middle class, this means that they're making tons of extra money. The problem comes for people in the lower class, like me and my family. We're expecting our rent to jump by at least 10% this winter. The problem is that we didn't get 10% raises this year...nothing even close, and I know a lot of other poor people who are really struggling in this booming economy.
And before anyone tries to quote social Darwinism, some people can't help their economic circumstances. For ourselves, it was very important that we weren't both working full time, that way one of us would always be here with the kids. We see too many kids running around, getting in trouble, because their parents aren't home. This isn't what we wanted for our kids, so we chose to make less money. Through all of our financial troubles, we've done everything we can to avoid government aid. We pay for our health insurance because we get better health care options, and because we've racked up so many medical bills, we're both working more than we'd planned...and because of that, we don't qualify for food aid. Let me explain that again...we made a choice to not be on government health insurance...as a result, we have massive bills that we're trying to pay off. In order to pay them off, we're both working extra, and because we're working extra, we can't get government help. That's right, we're busting our asses to do everything we can to stay off of the government dollar, and because of that, when we actually needed help, we couldn't qualify.
We, and many like us, were barely scraping by before pot was legalized, and now with all of the growth we're seeing, we struggle every month to keep a roof over our heads.
In order to put food on the table, I'm picking up any freelance editing work I can (contact me if you are interested) and Rebecca is having to donate plasma twice a week. She has to be stuck by a needle twice a week just so our kids can eat. This isn't what America is supposed to be.
Our biggest hope is that we have a really severe winter and some of the people that have moved here will move to warmer states that have legal pot. It's rather sad that in order for our family to make it, we have to hope that the economy crashes. This is what legalized pot has done to Colorado, at least the poor of Colorado...

Delirious Doubles again

From the Nomadic Delirium Press blog:
There was a mistake in our original posting of the Delirious Doubles guidelines. We had the lengths for the various types of stories set wrong. This is what the guidelines should be...
In our ongoing effort to publish whatever the hell we feel like, we give you Delirious Doubles. Some of you may be old enough to remember the Ace Doubles, well, this is something like that. We will be pairing two stories together from two different authors and publishing them together. We were originally debating whether we wanted to do novellas or novelettes, but we finally decided, why not do both! And while we’re at it, why not do short stories as well. Some might not like this idea because people have argued in the past that we don’t follow traditional publishing models…OH WELL!
Here are the guidelines. We are looking for science fiction and fantasy stories, no particular themes, no particular styles, just stories that we like. We will then pair those stories up with another story and create a Delirious Double.
SHORT STORIES: These are defined as stories under 7,500 words. Payment will be $10 on publication for first rights. Short story doubles will only be released as e-books.
NOVELETTES: These are defined as stories between 7,500 words and 17,500 words. Payment will be $20 on publication for first rights. Novelette doubles will be released as both e-book and print books.
NOVELLAS: These are defined as stories between 17,500 words and 40,000 words. Payment will be $30 plus 10% of the profits for first rights. (Each author gets 10%). Novella doubles will be released as both e-book and print books.

We are looking for first rights, so no reprints. We also do not want to see stories set in other people’s universes. Other than that, we want you to entertain us. It’s always a good idea to read some of the publications that we’ve released in the past to get some sense of what we’re looking for.
Stories should be submitted as Word or RTF attachments to ndpdeliriousdoubles (at) yahoo (dot) com.

How Cymbalta almost ruined my marriage and my life

For more than two years now, I've been taking Cymbalta. I've been taking it for chronic pain and chronic depression. Although it did block some of the pain, it didn't really make for a higher quality in life. It also numbed the depression by turning me into something like a robot. No matter what happened, my reactions were nothing like they were supposed to be, happy, sad, angry, whatever, they were all dampened. Unfortunately, this took a toll on my marriage. No matter what I would say to Rebecca, it never showed the emotion that you should show to the most important person in your life. When I was upset, she could never really tell...when I was overwhelmed with joy, she could never really tell. It had gotten to a point that she wasn't sure I was really in love with her anymore, and I certainly am, but the drug kept me from really showing it to her. Although the words came out, and there were actions to support the words, there was none of the emotion that should have been there..
So, because of this, I stopped taking the meds a little over a month ago (DON'T DO THIS, by the way.) I suffered some side effects, but they were nothing near what I expected, and a couple of weeks ago, I started to feel like me again. That may not seem like it's a good thing, since I'm basically an emotional wreck again, but I can feel. I can really laugh when I need to, and I can cry again, and most importantly, I can really show the love I feel to my wife and kids.
Don't get me wrong, anti-depressants are a good thing, and they might be right for some people, but they weren't working for me. Since going off of them, I feel more creative than I have in years, and also feel more opinionated, so look for more angry blog posts in the future, but most importantly I feel like me again. Being on the emotional roller coaster that is chronic depression is going to be a dangerous thing, and I know that, but at least I'm myself again.
One of the reasons for my wanting to write this post is because I saw a post on Facebook today saying that it was the 8 month anniversary of the passing of a friend of mine. I remember the day I found out that we had lost him. I remember feeling sad, and I remember talking to Rebecca about it, but my reaction was nothing like it should have been. Reading that post today actually brought me to tears for the first time since he'd passed away, and I realized that that was what I should be feeling.
Like I've said, I don't think anti-depressants are a bad thing. In fact, I think they're a wonderful thing for many people, but for me, I have to be myself, and Cymbalta took that away from me, and it almost took my family away. It wouldn't have been worth it to have my sadness masked if I didn't have them in my life...

The Least Practical of Jokes

I can't believe that I forgot to list this story when I was listing my previously published works a couple of years ago. Robert Lendorin has always been one of my favorite characters that I've created. I think I need to re-visit him one of these days.

A man gets conned into helping Robert Lendorin pull off a practical joke, but when things go wrong, what will the consequences be?

Diagnosis?

Back from the doctor. He seems to think the problem is most likely costochondritis (which is basically inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum. He also thinks there may be two or three detached ribs.
The course of action for now is to stay on the medication I'm on for another two weeks. After that, we'll try a different pain med if I'm still in pain. If things haven't improved by the middle of June, we'll do a CT scan. If it turns out that it is costochondritis, they're going to try a temporary nerve block. If that works, they're going to go with a permanent nerve block, killing the nerves that are causing the problem. If that doesn't work...well, who knows...
