The Fifth Di... March 2018
The March 2018 issue of The Fifth Di... is now available...
The March issue of The Fifth Di… takes a walk on the dark side with Lachlan Walter, Robert N Stephenson, Rik Hunik, and Gustavo Bondoni bringing you stories of the darker side of humanity.
You’ll be taken to a bleak future where the poor are taken advantage of, a future where a branch of humanity comes back to Earth, but the encounter doesn’t go anything like people might have expected, a future where immortality brings a terrible consequence, and an effort to explore the universe that is brutally sabotaged. If you like fiction that warns you about the dangers of the future, this is the issue for you.

I sold a drabble
I sold a drabble to Alban Lake Publishing's 10th Drabble Contest, Alien Brothel. For those of you that don't know what a drabble is, it's a story of exactly 100 words...no more, no less. It's not an easy feat to pull off.
As the e-book editor for ALP, I've been reading the Drabbles for many years, but I never sat down and wrote one, but then I came up with an idea for this one called "Learn to Read." It was 110 words when I finished...that meant cutting 10 words, which is not easy with such a small word count. Still, I managed, and the story will appear in the anthology in early April.
To give you an idea of what a drabble is, this post is more than 100 words, now imagine a complete story that's shorter than this post...

The Union Man...and other stories
From the Nomadic Delirium Press blog:
The Union Man...and other stories by Eamonn Murphy is now available!
The Union Man and other stories brings you three stories from Eamonn Murphy.
An interrogator (torturer) for MI5 is accused of a murder, a murder he couldn’t have committed, but where his investigation takes him will not only change his life, but it will forever change the world.
Happy is a drug that has been legalized in England, but no one can expect the consequences of what that legalization will mean, except for one man, and no one want to listen to him, because everyone wants to be Happy.
Finally, a brief story that is a twist on the princess and the frog tale.

2017 in review
2017 was a down and down year. There were some ups, but they seemed like mere molehills compared to the mammoth valleys that were the downs. Every year I think, "Well, the next year has to be better than this one..." and the next year basically says, "Hold my beer."
If I had one quote I would like to send 2017, it would be from Mr. Spock in Star Trek VI. I would say, "Go to hell."

A Poet Explores the Stars
From the Nomadic Delirium Press blog:
We’re looking for
poems about the exploration of space. The poems can be about our solar system,
other solar systems, black holes, or anything in between. We publish a lot of
fiction about the exploration of space, but now we want the poet’s point of
view.
All poems must be at
least 20 lines in length. While experimental structure is ok for print,
this collection will be both print and electronic, and experimental structures
do not translate well to electronic formats, so preference will be given to
poems with traditional structures.
We will accept no
more than two poems from each poet, so please send us your best, and we are not
looking for reprints for this collection.
Payment will be $5
per poem and one contributor’s copy.
All submissions
should be sent to editor (at) nomadicdeliriumpress (dot) com. The subject
should be “Poet Explores submission.” We prefer attachments, but you can paste
your submission into the body of the e-mail.
If you have any
questions, please send them to the address above.

Mars Station Beta
From the Nomadic Delirium Press blog:
We'd like to introduce you to our newest project...Mars Station Beta. This will be a shared world project, much like The Divided States of America.
The year is 2052. It has been two years since the unexplained destruction of Mars Station Alpha, and now the human race has decided to go back to Mars, but on an even more massive scale.
Mars Station Beta is made up of ten different modules that are all interconnected with each other and around a central lab/recreation area. There are a total of 50 colonists on the station with another 50 on their way from Earth. The base is a multi-national project, funded by the largest nations on Earth, with representatives from all of those nations, as well as a few of the best and brightest from the “lesser” nations. While nationalism is still an issue, it’s not as big of an issue following the short duration World War III that swept the Earth in 2022.
Mars Station Beta has been established in Elysium Plantia. Mars Station Alpha had been established in Argyre Planitia, but so far, no one has visited the station to try to determine what happened to the 20 colonists. All that is known is that their final transmission was, “I can’t believe there are…” Before that transmission, there were no signs of problems with the base.
Mars Station Beta is commanded by Roger Anderson, a hard-nosed military man from the United States. While he is a fair leader, he has little patience with the scientists on the base because they don’t have the same type of discipline as the military members.
The second in command is Vasili Andropova, a former member of the Russian military, who has now devoted herself to the pursuit of genetic research. She tolerates Commander Anderson, but she has little patience for his sense of discipline.
Writer’s Guidelines
If you’d like to contribute to Mars Station Beta, we’re looking for individual stories of at least 2,500 words.
How we will publish: This will not be an anthology (at first). We will be publishing each story as an individual e-story, and these stories will be distributed to all of the usual sales markets.
Pay: This will depend entirely on how the story sells. We will be doing a 50/50 split with each author of the profits from the story, with royalties being paid on our normal quarterly schedule. If this project takes off, we will be doing a print anthology, or possibly many print anthologies, and then there will be further payment at that point for reprint rights.
Rights: We are looking for first rights on any story.
Price of stories: The pricing of stories will depend on their length. Stories from 2,500 words to 5,000 words will be priced at 99 cents. Stories that are 5,001 words to 10,000 words will be priced at $1.49, and stories that are over 10,000 words will be priced at $1.99. Obviously the longer the story, the higher the royalty, but we prefer quality over length.
Overall theme: We are not looking for an overall theme to the stories. We want quality stories. Stories should be about characters other than the two commanders. It’s fine to include them as background characters, but we’d like to see stories about the other characters. If you’d like to share character or story ideas with other writers, we can set up a private Facebook group for this project that will allow everyone to throw ideas out and play off of each other’s ideas.
All stories should be sent to editor (at) nomadicdeliriumpress (dot) com with the subject line reading “Mars Station Beta Submission.”

Future Syndicate II
Guidelines for Future Syndicate II
What we’re looking for: We want stories about criminal activity in the future. We’re not looking for detective stories…we want stories that are about the criminals themselves, and their activities. This is a science fiction anthology, so science has to play some role in the story. Hard SF would be great, but we will look at adventure SF as well. As important as science is to the story, we really want to see well drawn characters who are believable and act in realistic ways. We all know that crime is a bad thing, but these people do it for a reason…what is that reason? Having said that, we don’t want to see fiction that portrays the criminals as completely evil with no redeeming qualities.

Story length: Stories must be 2,000-7,000 words in length.
Rights: We would prefer to buy first rights, but we will accept reprints as long as the previous publishing history is included. You also must own the rights to the story.
Payment: Now for the important stuff. We will pay ½ cent per word for first rights, plus two contributor copies, paid on publication. We will pay a $5 flat fee plus two contributor copies on publication for reprints. Please make sure you note the difference in pay.
What we don’t want: As already stated, no detective stories, no unbelievable characters. We also don’t want to see fan fiction, or fiction based in other people’s universes. If you’ve written a lot of stories in your own universe, then we certainly don’t mind that.
Response times: We will respond to all submissions within two months, but we will respond with a form rejection…we just like to let everyone know that up front.
Reading Period: We will be reading submissions until the anthology is full.
Submission Formats: All submissions must be sent as attachments, no exceptions. Stories should be formatted in Word or rtf.
Submission address: To submit a piece, or if you have any further questions, please send them to editor (at) nomadicdeliriumpress (dot) com. Sorry, we aren’t using hyperlinks because we’re really sick of the damn spammers. All submissions should have the subject: Future Syndicate Submission.

The Fifth Di...
The December issue of The Fifth Di… is here.
The December 2017 issue of The Fifth Di… brings you stories from Chris Dean, Karen Heslop, Kate Runnels, and G. W. Thomas.
A serial killer is loose and it’s up to a psi talent to catch them, but can she hold herself together long enough to succeed? A young girl is “chosen” to sacrifice herself for the good of her village, but nothing can prepare her for what this sacrifice means. A woman is determined to continue to explore the galaxy, but the chaos of Earth is threatening to destroy her dreams, and she’s already had so many dreams destroyed. And finally, a man down on his luck finds that that luck is about to change in a way he could never expect.

Nomadic Novellas
From the Nomadic Delirium Press blog:
We're very happy to announce our newest project...NOMADIC NOVELLAS...
The guidelines are pretty straight-forward, we’re looking for stories of novella length. We’re mostly interested in science fiction, but we will consider fantasy. Other than that, the theme is basically up to you. All novellas will be released in both print and e-book format.
Length: The SFWA defines a novella as being a story between 17,500 words and 40,000 words, and that definition works for us. If your story falls between those lengths, then you can submit it here. If not, please look at our other guidelines.
Payment: We will pay $50 in advance plus 5 contributors’ copies. In addition, the author shall receive 25% of all profits made from the book…paid quarterly.
Where to send your gems: All submission should be sent to editor (at) nomadicdeliriumpress (dot) com. We think you can figure out the real address. Your subject line should read “Novella Submission.”
Other important info: All submissions should be sent as .doc, .docx, or .rtf files. We will respond within two months. All submissions must be original works. We will not publish works based in other people’s universes…of course, a universe of your own creation is just fine. We will not consider reprints.
Any questions should be directed to the submission address above.

Tough month
October took a toll on me. Nomadic had several book releases, we had MileHiCon, I got older, and I was putting in extra hours at the "real" job, and those hours were difficult. It's taken a real toll on me, physically, mentally, and emotionally. November has been fairly mellow so far, and I'm working on getting caught up, although my body and mind don't want to do anything. For those of you waiting on things from me, they will be coming...I promise.

Disharmony of the Spheres
Mental illness is very common in our society, but it’s also very misunderstood. Many view those with mental illnesses as being weak, but there is a great deal of strength in those that must battle their own minds on a regular basis.
Disharmony of the Spheres focuses on characters with mental illnesses that are still able to be successful. They may not completely overcome their illnesses, but they are able to beat them back and succeed.
In this volume, you will find the fiction of Ian Brazee Cannon, Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, MH Bonham, David Lee Summers, Nicole Givens Kurtz, Kate Runnels, Michael Morgan, L.J. Bonham, Carol Hightshoe, Francis W. Alexander, and Terrie Leigh Relf.
This book is dedicated to all of the science fiction fans and writers that must battle their own personal demons every day, and half of all of the profits from this book will go to The Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Organization, a group that battles teen suicide.

Delivery
From the Nomadic Delirium Press blog:
A new story in The Divided States of America...
Reed makes deliveries between the Great Lakes Conglomerate and the Wastelands on a regular basis, but this delivery is more dangerous, and much more important than any previous delivery. Reed is willing to risk his life to make a difference in a divided world, but is the risk worth it? He certainly thinks so…

Back to the Old Ways
Captain Christopher Chases Crows knows that something horribly evil is
going on in the Wastelands, but can he convince his government to get
involved, and is getting involved even the right thing to do? Morality
and law aren’t always the same things, but in the Wastelands, there are
times when neither exists.

New story done
I just put the finishing touches on a new Divided States story. This one coming in at around 3000 words. It should be available in about a week. Something tells me that this one will piss some people off...but then I've never been known to write happy sunshine type stories, nor have I ever cared if my fiction makes people uncomfortable.

Writing is crazy
For the last month or so, I've been doing research in my few spare moments for a new Divided States of America story. A few days ago, an idea came to me for a different Divided States story...so, of course I wrote 1500 words on the new idea today, and I haven't even touched the original idea.
No wonder writers have so many mental issues...this is a field that really can drive you crazy!

A Problem in Translation is an audio book
My novel about first contact with difficult to understand aliens, A Problem in Translation, is now available as an audio book at https://www.audible.com/pd/Sci-Fi-Fantasy/A-Problem-in-Translation-Audiobook/B0753KWGRL/ref=a_search_c4_1_1_srTtl?qid=1503946590&sr=1-1
What is humanity to do when faced by aliens whose language is vague at best? What is humanity to do when faced by aliens that are worshipped or feared by almost every other species in the universe? What is humanity to do when faced by aliens that make decisions that seem completely illogical?
These are the questions that must be answered by Captain Shiro Takahashi and the crew of the Astrid, and failing to come up with the right answers could lead to the annihilation of humanity at the prehensile limbs of the Lemec.
Governing, but not governing most of the nearby galaxy, the Lemec are a powerful species that no one really understands, and this is just how the Lemec want it. Captain Takahashi is trying to understand, but the Lemec try to block his actions at every turn. How can he ever hope to save humanity, and do the Lemec even care if humanity is saved?

No more politics as usual
I've already started seeing memes saying that anyone who votes third party has to vote democrat in the next presidential election to make sure that Trump doesn't get a second term. My response to this (as a third party voter) is screw you. This is America, and we're allowed to vote for who we want. Besides, voting for a democrat really isn't much better than voting for a republican. Yes, I tend to be more liberal than conservative, but neither party really represents me...and if each of you is honest, you'll find that neither party really represents you either.
Many argue that republican politicians can't be trusted because they're in the pocket of big business. Well, I have some bad news for you, so are the democrats. The republicans might be in the front pocket of big business, and the democrats might be in the back pocket, but believe me, the democrats want to be in that front pocket, and they will sacrifice their voters to get their.
The ultimate goal of the majority of career politicians is to get power and to get rich. They're not going to get rich by doing what "We the People" want, but they will get rich by doing what big business wants. I don't care if you're talking about the Bushes, the Clintons, Trump, Obama, or anyone else that has seen power during my lifetime, they're in it for themselves. The republicans may show it more outwardly, but believe me, the democrats want their share of the money too. Why do you think that almost every politician that makes it to Washington walks out of Washington with a lot more money than they should have based on their salaries? Trust me, the answer isn't that they did what was best for the American people.
Continuing to vote these clowns into office is taking more and more away from "We the People." Remember, these people are supposed to represent us. They're not our leaders, as Trump might think, but rather our representatives...and yet they continue to do what is not in our best interests.
The first thing we have to do is give third parties a fighting chance. The laws as they're made up now are created and enforced by the democrats and the republicans, so they make it virtually impossible for third parties to really have a chance.
The second thing we have to do is make congress pass term limits for all members of the house and senate, and make those limits retroactive. We need to get rid of the old guard. No more Mcconell, no more Pelosi, get rid of all of them. They're a plague upon our society and are so far out of touch with the American people that they can never represent the American people.
The third thing we have to do is stop listening to the media. All of the networks are biased and they preach those biases as if they were handed down by some deity. Let' go back to network neutrality, the way it used to be.
The fourth thing we have to do is stop attacking one another. This is what THEY want. I'm constantly seeing so much liberal and conservative bashing, but the truth is, who among us really represents what these people are attacking. If you want to comment about the idiocy of Trump or Pelosi, then by all means go for it, but you can't say that just because someone is a conservative they don't care about people, or just because someone is a liberal, they don't care about protecting America. Individuals are not sound bites, and we need to stop acting like they are.
Go behave yourselves and vote all of the morons, liberal and conservative, out of Washington and let us start anew.
END OF RANT.

Enough is enough
I am so tired of everything that happens in the world being politicized. Yes, politics plays a big part in the world, but every time something happens, we don't have to blame "the other side." Why does there have to be "the other side?" Seriously, how many republican voters actually agree with everything their party does? Or how many democratic voters actually agree with everything their party does? The majority of us lie somewhere between these extremes. Although I am quite liberal on a lot of things, there are other things that I am more conservative about. I don't actually consider myself to be a liberal, and we need to stop trying to label ourselves and everything around us.
The truth is, the two political parties and the media have spent decades poisoning our minds, trying to send us back to the tribal days when we had to fear "the other." The truth is before we're liberals or conservatives, Christians, Muslims, Atheists, or whatever other description you want to label us with, we're human beings. We have more in common with "the other" than we think. It doesn't matter what we believe or who we voted for, we should all be striving to make the HUMAN RACE better. If we're not willing to do that...then what the hell is the point of all the senseless finger pointing and bickering?
THERE IS NO POINT

These stories will have you questioning what reality is, and also what our future holds for us. In the end, you’ll be asking yourself, should we embrace the future, or run from it. The June issue of The Fifth Di... is here!
From the Nomadic Delirium Press blog:
A soul collector is murdered and taken into the “city” his father designed for the dead, now he must plot to escape and get revenge on his murderer in Dale Carother’s “Haunting the Painted City.” A magical mirror allows an unexpected glimpse into the past in Matthew Spence’s “The Mirror.” In the future, corporations still control elections, but what about when politicians decide to fight back is what awaits you in Eamonn Murphy’s “Campaign Trail.” Finally, one man is sent to the great void between galaxies and forced to face his own loneliness in Robert N. Stephenson’s “The Black Canvas.”

The Divided States of America is not liberal propaganda
A couple of weeks ago, I received an e-mail accusing me of publishing liberal propaganda with the project I'm editing...The Divided States of America.
First of all, if I want to publish liberal propaganda, that's my right as a citizen of the United States. You know, we have these things called freedom, and one of those freedoms allows me to write or publish whatever I want to.
Second of all, The Divided States of America is not liberal propaganda. It was pretty obvious to me that this guy had not actually read the guidelines or read about the nation-states I created for this project. The guidelines clearly state that I'm not looking for a specific political viewpoint, but rather looking for a good story. The nation-states are not all liberal, there are plenty of conservative nation-states. The guy also accused me of being a Trump-hater who created this project because I was unhappy with Trump winning the election. Now, while I may consider Trump the worst thing that has ever happened to this country, this project was actually created before the election, because I thought we were screwed no matter who won...and furthermore, the background for the DSA states that the problems might have started before the 2016 elections, which is how I really feel. Anyone that reads this blog on a regular basis knows that I think the two-party system is the worst thing happening in America and I have been arguing this point for a couple of decades now.
So, this guy is entitled to his opinion, even if it's wrong, but before you accuse me of something...perhaps you should get the facts before you do...but unfortunately that no longer seems to be the way for most conservatives...or even most liberals anymore. What a sad state we live in...might even say what a sad divided state we live in...

The Divided States of America is still seeking submissions
No one can say with any reasonable certainty when the United States
of America began to fall apart. Many point to the presidential election
of 2016, but most believe the breakup started long before this. Now,
in the year 2110, the former United States is made up of 13
nation-states and The Wastelands. Some of the nation-states have
prospered under self-rule, while others have declined. Some
nation-states are very accepting of outsiders, while others trust no
one…sometimes not even their fellow citizens. There is chaos in some
places, and order in others…sometimes too much order.
The first state to break away from the USA was, not unexpectedly, Texas, and from there, things continued to spiral out of control as the national government tried to hold on to control that the state governments wanted back, and eventually, the federal government was no longer able to control the states, and the break-up came about.
Some of the nation-states kept the name “America” in their new names. Some did this as a tribute to where they had come from, while others did it to remind their citizens of what they were breaking away from. Others adopted new names, or took on names that were given to them.
Borders in some areas are heavily patrolled, even walled in places, while other borders have no protection at all…mostly it depends on the views of the new government and its citizens, even though sometimes those two groups still don’t agree. Let’s face it, greed and independence are bred into the human race, and even allying with others that have similar viewpoints does not necessarily mean that they will always get along.
What we’re looking for: Stories must be at least 2,500 words…with no upper limit. Stories must be science fiction, in the sense that they take place in the future, but depending on the nation-state that you’re writing about, the science may or may not be as important. Obviously, we’ll be focusing more on “soft” sf, but we certainly have room for “hard” sf.
This probably makes sense, since this is a unique setting, and we doubt that you have stories written about any of these nation-states lying around in your desk.
If you write a story with a conservative slant, or a story with a liberal slant, we don’t care. We just want good stories. Some places are more likely to have liberal stories, while others are more likely to have conservative stories, but that doesn’t mean you have to write that way. You don’t even have to have a political agenda in your story because we’re more interested in how people are surviving in these new nation states.
Where to send your gems: Once you have your amazing stories written, we ask that you send them to editor (at) nomadicdeliriumpress (dot) com. Please include “Divided States” in the subject line.
Further questions: If you have any questions please send them to the same address.
