For a few years now, pot has been legal in Colorado, and as expected, the economy here is booming, and I do mean BOOMING. Businesses are coming here to open new offices, unemployment is very low, and everything looks great to everyone outside of Colorado. The problem is that the cost of living in Colorado is skyrocketing with housing costs going up nearly 10% every year, and the cost of groceries, and everything else going up at nearly the same rate...and there's the problem. For the upper class and the upper middle class, this means that they're making tons of extra money. The problem comes for people in the lower class, like me and my family. We're expecting our rent to jump by at least 10% this winter. The problem is that we didn't get 10% raises this year...nothing even close, and I know a lot of other poor people who are really struggling in this booming economy.
And before anyone tries to quote social Darwinism, some people can't help their economic circumstances. For ourselves, it was very important that we weren't both working full time, that way one of us would always be here with the kids. We see too many kids running around, getting in trouble, because their parents aren't home. This isn't what we wanted for our kids, so we chose to make less money. Through all of our financial troubles, we've done everything we can to avoid government aid. We pay for our health insurance because we get better health care options, and because we've racked up so many medical bills, we're both working more than we'd planned...and because of that, we don't qualify for food aid. Let me explain that again...we made a choice to not be on government health insurance...as a result, we have massive bills that we're trying to pay off. In order to pay them off, we're both working extra, and because we're working extra, we can't get government help. That's right, we're busting our asses to do everything we can to stay off of the government dollar, and because of that, when we actually needed help, we couldn't qualify.
We, and many like us, were barely scraping by before pot was legalized, and now with all of the growth we're seeing, we struggle every month to keep a roof over our heads.
In order to put food on the table, I'm picking up any freelance editing work I can (contact me if you are interested) and Rebecca is having to donate plasma twice a week. She has to be stuck by a needle twice a week just so our kids can eat. This isn't what America is supposed to be.
Our biggest hope is that we have a really severe winter and some of the people that have moved here will move to warmer states that have legal pot. It's rather sad that in order for our family to make it, we have to hope that the economy crashes. This is what legalized pot has done to Colorado, at least the poor of Colorado...

Delirious Doubles again
From the Nomadic Delirium Press blog:
There was a mistake in our original posting of the Delirious Doubles guidelines. We had the lengths for the various types of stories set wrong. This is what the guidelines should be...
In our ongoing effort to publish whatever the hell we feel like, we give you Delirious Doubles. Some of you may be old enough to remember the Ace Doubles, well, this is something like that. We will be pairing two stories together from two different authors and publishing them together. We were originally debating whether we wanted to do novellas or novelettes, but we finally decided, why not do both! And while we’re at it, why not do short stories as well. Some might not like this idea because people have argued in the past that we don’t follow traditional publishing models…OH WELL!
Here are the guidelines. We are looking for science fiction and fantasy stories, no particular themes, no particular styles, just stories that we like. We will then pair those stories up with another story and create a Delirious Double.
SHORT STORIES: These are defined as stories under 7,500 words. Payment will be $10 on publication for first rights. Short story doubles will only be released as e-books.
NOVELETTES: These are defined as stories between 7,500 words and 17,500 words. Payment will be $20 on publication for first rights. Novelette doubles will be released as both e-book and print books.
NOVELLAS: These are defined as stories between 17,500 words and 40,000 words. Payment will be $30 plus 10% of the profits for first rights. (Each author gets 10%). Novella doubles will be released as both e-book and print books.
We are looking for first rights, so no reprints. We also do not want to see stories set in other people’s universes. Other than that, we want you to entertain us. It’s always a good idea to read some of the publications that we’ve released in the past to get some sense of what we’re looking for.
Stories should be submitted as Word or RTF attachments to ndpdeliriousdoubles (at) yahoo (dot) com.

What is the alcohol tolerance of a superhero?
When is a good time to visit the universe next door?
Why does Buffalo Bill want a T-Rex?
Is Buggs Bunny transgendered or just a drag queen?

How Cymbalta almost ruined my marriage and my life
For more than two years now, I've been taking Cymbalta. I've been taking it for chronic pain and chronic depression. Although it did block some of the pain, it didn't really make for a higher quality in life. It also numbed the depression by turning me into something like a robot. No matter what happened, my reactions were nothing like they were supposed to be, happy, sad, angry, whatever, they were all dampened. Unfortunately, this took a toll on my marriage. No matter what I would say to Rebecca, it never showed the emotion that you should show to the most important person in your life. When I was upset, she could never really tell...when I was overwhelmed with joy, she could never really tell. It had gotten to a point that she wasn't sure I was really in love with her anymore, and I certainly am, but the drug kept me from really showing it to her. Although the words came out, and there were actions to support the words, there was none of the emotion that should have been there..
So, because of this, I stopped taking the meds a little over a month ago (DON'T DO THIS, by the way.) I suffered some side effects, but they were nothing near what I expected, and a couple of weeks ago, I started to feel like me again. That may not seem like it's a good thing, since I'm basically an emotional wreck again, but I can feel. I can really laugh when I need to, and I can cry again, and most importantly, I can really show the love I feel to my wife and kids.
Don't get me wrong, anti-depressants are a good thing, and they might be right for some people, but they weren't working for me. Since going off of them, I feel more creative than I have in years, and also feel more opinionated, so look for more angry blog posts in the future, but most importantly I feel like me again. Being on the emotional roller coaster that is chronic depression is going to be a dangerous thing, and I know that, but at least I'm myself again.
One of the reasons for my wanting to write this post is because I saw a post on Facebook today saying that it was the 8 month anniversary of the passing of a friend of mine. I remember the day I found out that we had lost him. I remember feeling sad, and I remember talking to Rebecca about it, but my reaction was nothing like it should have been. Reading that post today actually brought me to tears for the first time since he'd passed away, and I realized that that was what I should be feeling.
Like I've said, I don't think anti-depressants are a bad thing. In fact, I think they're a wonderful thing for many people, but for me, I have to be myself, and Cymbalta took that away from me, and it almost took my family away. It wouldn't have been worth it to have my sadness masked if I didn't have them in my life...

Diagnosis?
Back from the doctor. He seems to think the problem is most likely
costochondritis (which is basically inflammation of the cartilage
connecting the ribs to the sternum. He also thinks there may be two or
three detached ribs.
The course of action for now is to stay on the medication I'm on for another two weeks. After that, we'll try a different pain med if I'm still in pain. If things haven't improved by the middle of June, we'll do a CT scan. If it turns out that it is costochondritis, they're going to try a temporary nerve block. If that works, they're going to go with a permanent nerve block, killing the nerves that are causing the problem. If that doesn't work...well, who knows...

Mundanities: A Digest of Mundane Science Fiction
Mundanities
A Digest of
Mundane Science Fiction
Welcome to a new science fiction zine being published by
Nomadic Delirium Press. This zine will be published twice a year, as both a
print and e-zine, on February 1st and August 1st, with
the first issue appearing February 1st, 2019.
So, what is mundane SF? It doesn’t mean boring, as some
might think. Why would we want to publish magazine of boring fiction?
Mundane SF is defined as fiction focusing on stories set on
or near the Earth, with a believable use of technology and science as it exists
at the time the story is written. No aliens, time travel, interstellar travel,
wormholes, warp drive, ftl, or anything like that.
Sound boring? Not really. Think of all of the science
fiction that can and has been written about the Earth and the planets.
RESPONSE TIMES
Our current response time is two months. If you change your
e-mail address, please let me know. There are always a few submissions that
never get responses because the contributor changes their address.
FICTION
Fiction must be science fiction, and it MUST follow
the basic guidelines. I’m looking for stories up to 10,000 words. Reprints will
be considered, although preference will be given to first rights stories. I
also won’t consider simultaneous submissions. Flash fiction is not likely to be
successful with me unless it's absolutely brilliant. I'm not a big flash fan,
so please keep that in mind when submitting.
FICTION PAYMENTS
Original stories up to 1,500 words will receive $5.
Original stories between 1,501 and 5,000 words will receive
$10.
Original stories longer than 5,000 words will receive $15.
Reprints, no matter the length, will receive $5
POETRY
At this time, we are not reading poetry. If the magazine
does well, then we will start taking a couple of poems per issue.
ART
We are not currently seeking artwork.
FORMATS
All submissions must be sent as attachments in rtf or Word.
I will read submissions that are sent pasted into messages, but I'd prefer
attachments. Every submission must contain the word "Submission" in
its subject line, or it will be flushed with all of the spam. I hate to start
getting anal, but given the amount of Spam I have to sift through, it just
makes my job easier, and a happy editor is always a good thing. Also, all submissions
must follow standard ms guidelines...if you don't know what that means, please
find out. Your name, byline, and address MUST appear on the submission.
All submissions MUST have page numbers. If you want something
italicized, please italicize it in the submission. Also, please include a bio
with your submission written in the third person.
FINAL NOTES
Don’t send work that is based in other people’s universes.
All works must be original with no threat of copyright infringement. All
submissions should be sent to mundanitieszine at yahoo dot com.

More medical ranting
As everyone knows, I've ranted many times about the screwed up medical system in America, especially the way insurance companies get to decide who gets treatment. Well, I'm at it again. Rebecca was diagnosed with bulging discs. She went in for treatment, which involved needles in her spine. After seeing what the insurance company was going to charge us, I talked to the billing office at the place where this was done. They basically said that they would be covering a major part of our bill...once we'd paid our deductible...which in this case is $2000. We can barely afford to put food on the table most weeks, and they expect us to be able to pay a $2000 bill before we really get any help? That's outrageous. As a result, Rebecca won't be going in for any more treatments, and will continue to be in serious pain.
On another note, I have an appointment with a surgeon tomorrow to see if there can be any relief for my chronic pain. I'm sure this will be something else we can't afford.
It's sad that in America we have to choose between our health and basic survival.
And before anyone says it's the ACA or it's Trump's new plan, the simple answer is that the majority of politicians, on both sides of the aisle, get huge payouts from the insurance companies, and therefore they allow the insurance company too much input on what goes into our medical plans. Insurance companies should not have this much power!

Earth Day
Today is Earth Day, and to me, it seems kind of silly that we only recognize this day once a year. In reality, every day should be Earth Day. The sad truth of the matter is that if you're not in elementary school, you really don't hear about Earth Day that much. People seem to be forgetting about the problems the planet faces, and with the current administration and their plans to dismantle much of what the EPA does, things are only getting worse.
A common argument I hear from the Right is that global climate change isn't real. Ok. Assuming for a moment that they're right, so what?
So, we shouldn't have cleaner air and water because global climate change isn't real? Doesn't it make sense to have these things for our children, and our children's children, even if the planet isn't warming up?
Fossil fuels will eventually run out, so we shouldn't develop renewable energies, because global climate change isn't real? How does that even make sense? When we run out of fossil fuels, what are we going to do?
I also hear that we shouldn't be worrying about oil because global climate change isn't real. The truth is, oil is also a fossil fuel, and it will eventually run out. Not only that, but if we stop our dependence on Mid-East oil, we will stop funneling money into countries that fund terrorism. This should make sense to people on the right. So, even if you don't believe in global climate change, switching to alternative fuel sources makes sense from a political point of view.
So, taking better care of the planet actually makes sense for people from every political perspective, so let's start today, and let's make sure we never stop!

A grand experiment
A while back, I decided to publish the stories I've sold over all of these years as individual e-stories...each selling for 99 cents, or for free if they were short enough. With many of these stories, I've actually made more from selling the e-stories than I initially made selling the first rights to a publisher. As a result of this, I'm going to try something different with my latest story. Instead of trying to sell it to one of the many markets out there, I'm going to post it as a new e-story, and sell it myself.
I'm not sure how this will work, but in this new age of publishing, everything seems to be an experiment anymore...
