The future

I'm a science fiction writer, and even though I tend to write about the darker aspects of humanity, deep down, I've always held a cautious optimism that humanity would outgrow it's dark side, and we would go out and explore the universe, but as I look around at the world today, I find it very hard to believe that's possible anymore. Whether it's the willful ignorance of so many in the world, or the blind following of leaders who only have their own interests at heart, or the absolute hatred for others that I see in so many people, I have actually lost faith in humanity, and I fear that I'm now watching the fall of our civilization and our species.
The behavior of so many of my fellow human beings is revolting, and it seems like it's only getting worse. Yes, there have been wonderful stories coming out of COVID, the current protests, and all of the other events that have been going on in our world, but there are also so many terrible stories that it's difficult to believe that humanity can survive this, or even that humanity deserves to survive this.
Star Trek envisioned a world where humanity could overcome so many of our demons, and much of science fiction has embraced this idea, but can it even be true anymore? Have we gone so far down this horrible rabbit hole that we can never get out? I fear that humanity has lost its way, and we'll never be able to achieve what we could have achieved...

A Trio of Wonder

For the first time in one collection, all three of prize-winning science fiction author J Alan Erwine's novels appear together. The Opium of the People tells the story of what happens to one man in America when the radical Christian right seizes control of the government. Red Moon Rising brings you the story of one young man's struggles to save the environment and take down the company that he blames for his brother's death. A Problem in Translation tells the story of humanity's first contact with aliens...aliens that are difficult to understand, and that seem to demand an almost godlike reverence from all of the other aliens that the humans meet.

A Problem in Translation

A Problem in Translation is now available as an independently published novel...
Humanity's first contact with an alien species, the Lemec, is complicated by the fact that the aliens don't use an entirely verbal language...not only that, but the other aliens in their "domain" seem to worship the Lemec as some type of gods, and as they seem to anticipate every move that Captain Shiro Takahashi and his crew make, humanity begins to think that maybe the other aliens know something that they don't.

Red Moon Rising

Red Moon Rising is now available as an independently published novel...
Erik Singer is an environmental warrior overwhelmed by the battle before him. When he loses his brother, his vision starts to become focused, but he can't overcome the overwhelming grief of the loss. But then a Native America activist named Charlie Chases Crows comes into his life, and Erik has no idea what that single event will do to his life.Troubled by wild dreams of his brother and bizarre Native American imagery, Erik suddenly finds himself on a quest to take down the corporation that he feels killed his brother, and ultimately change the world for the better…but can he fight the powers of corporate America?

The Opium of the People is back...now as a self-published novel.
The U.S. government has been overthrown! Future Syndicate II is here

Many would like to think that as our species evolves, crime will disappear, but most know this is not true. Crime has always been with us, and it always will. Future Syndicate II features stories told from the point of view of the criminals, sometimes bad people, sometimes people forced to make bad decisions, but always, in the eyes of society, criminals.

Lowering One's Self Before Fate is back

The re-release of my first short story collection, Lowering One's Self Before Fate, and other stories is now available...
"More than 20 years ago, ProMart Publishing released prize winning science fiction author J Alan Erwine's first short story collection. Now as Erwine establishes himself as an indie author, read that collection in a new and improved format. Journey back and see where Erwine's warped view of the universe started."

Lowering One's Self Before Fate

In my ongoing quest to more or less redefine my writing career as that of an indie author, I've decided to re-release my very first short story collection, Lowering One's Self Before Fate, and other stories. The book was first released a couple of decades ago by ProMart Publishing, and they used iUniverse to release the book. ProMart is long gone, and iUniverse was a ripoff from the very start, so I've decided the re-release of this book will be the next step for me, so look for the book very soon.
You can also expect some other surprises from me as I try to find a way to make time for my writing.

All's Well...

For more than twenty years I edited a small press science fiction magazine known as The Fifth Di… In June of 2019, I published the final issue that I would edit. This story was written as a tribute to all of the authors I had worked with for more than two decades and to all of the readers that had made editing the magazine worthwhile. I hope you enjoy this little story…

For those of you that have followed my career, you probably know that for more than 20 years now, I've been editing The Fifth Di... and the June issue will be the final issue. This story was written as something of a good bye to the writers and the readers that have made this such a great zine.

Downsizing Nomadic Delirium Press

From the Nomadic Delirium Press blog:

As most of you know, Nomadic Delirium Press is basically a one-man operation, and this man has had a very difficult couple of years. Towards the end of last year, I took a promotion at my “real” job in order to keep a roof over my family. That job takes up a great deal of hours. I sometimes work days, other times it’s nights, and sometimes its overnights. Needless to say, this, plus the fact that I’m not as young as I’d like to be, has left me exhausted and with very little free time.
When I got into publishing, it was to be a writer, and I no longer have time to write, and I miss it greatly, and I’m sure not writing is helping to contribute to the depression I constantly feel.  So, after a great deal of thought and discussions with my amazing and supportive wife, I’ve decided to severely downscale what Nomadic Delirium Press does over the next few months. The biggest change is that I’m going to be dropping all of the magazines (although I am in discussions with another publisher to try to keep some of them going.)
The changes look like this:
There will be no 2019 issue of The Martian Wave
The June 2019 issue will be the last issue of The Fifth Di…
The July 2019 issue of Spaceports & Spidersilk will be the last issue
Mundanities 2 will be the final issue of that zine
There will be no further issues of Environmental Holocaust
I will continue to read for The Divided States of America, Mars Station Beta, Delirious Doubles, novels, novellas, and collections. There are a few of you that I have spoken to about special projects, I am still open to those. Zines take up a great deal of time, and I want Nomadic to be more of a leisurely activity now as I focus on my writing, instead of a time-consuming drain on my life.
A Poet Explores the Stars will still be published, and Future Syndicate II will still be published (provided I get enough quality submissions.)
I know this is a great disappointment for many, but I need to finally look out for myself. I don’t want to look back at my life and wonder what I might have written…

Mundanities is here!

The premier issue of Mundanities: The Zine of Mundane Science Fiction is now available!

Mundane science fiction does not imply boring science fiction. Quite the contrary, mundane science fiction simply means fiction based on plausible science. How can sf be interesting without aliens and interstellar travel, you might ask…well, Mundanities answers that question with five fantastic stories that are based on very realistic science. You get the start of the second American revolution, a man refusing to give up his rights to technology, genetically engineered animals, genetically engineered athletes, and a prison system gone very wrong.Far from boring, these stories will have you thinking “what if?” And isn’t that really the point of science fiction?
